‘You are here’
Martin Parr
Parr’s ‘Signs of the times’ collection is indicative of specific eras, as it was based on the popular TV show of the same name. a few images from his collection are below
The shots, although staged, appear candid and taken completely accidentally due to the natural home environment created is realistic and feels homely. Although this was entirely intentional, it looks almost accidental, this makes the photos look more realistic, suggesting that this is a real family.
Nick Waplignton
Similarly to Parr’s work, Waplington’s also features a realistic and contemporary family, the photos capture loving and humorous photos of the family, and they convey a loving home, the type of home people wish for. In order to relate this to my work, I will shoot candid and unsuspecting photos of my own family which convey the same values.
My work
In my own work, I wanted to move from the comforting home environment, down the route of travel, following the saying “home is where I hang my hat”. Therefore, my sequence consists of a variety of locations, including fields from my home town, the coast, and items found travelling.
I then looked into how I can manipulate these images to make them more effective and interesting. I created a blue and pink color scheme which lined the locations in the images, as otherwise they would be miles apart. By linking them in this way, I was able to create a connection between the images and present them as a collective as though you’re never too far away from home.
